In compliance with the traditions and values of our Alaskan proprietors, Bowhead plays an active role in its communities. Company volunteers and the encouragement of Bowhead's senior management, have been instrumental in providing a variety of services to those in need, as well as area educational institutions.
As an annual participant in the United Way's Day of Caring, Bowhead has furnished teams of volunteers whose willingness to paint, clean, rake, plant, trim, and provide other necessary services to area social service organizations is impressive. In addition, the company contributes financially to this worthy cause each year.
Equally as significant is the company's contributions to Christmas in April. In addition to its cash donation, Bowhead provides teams of volunteers each year. These dedicated individuals assist with a broad area effort to enhance the quality of life for the needy by repairing and refurbishing their homes.
The winter holidays also find Bowhead active in the community. Each year we contribute to local Thanksgiving food drives and December Adopt-a-Family programs, ensuring that at least some of the less fortunate will have positive memories of these special times.
In response to a fire that destroyed several homes in Lexington Park, Maryland, Bowhead dipped into its community service fund to help with the immediate need to clothe, feed, and house these displaced individuals.
In 2003, Bowhead established an annual student award at St. Mary's College of Maryland in St. Mary's City. The generous Bowhead Award for Excellence in Studio Art is presented in person by a Bowhead manager to a deserving student at the college's awards ceremony, helping to cement relations between the company and the community.
The winds and rain brought by Hurricane Isabel in 2003 unearthed an 8-million-year-old baleen whale skull from a cliff along the Chesapeake Bay. After a U.S. Navy helicopter flew the massive fossil to the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland, the story made headlines. The relationship between the fossil and the bowhead whale, also a baleen, caught the attention of Bowhead management. A query to the museum revealed the need to fund an exhibit for this exceptionally rare find, a request to which Bowhead quickly responded with a philanthropic gift covering the entire expenditure.
